My Cincinnati Computer Won't Turn On — Here's What's Actually Wrong

June 27, 2026  ·  6 min read  ·  By Cincinnati PC Repair LLC

You press the power button and nothing happens. Or you get a flash of lights and then silence. Or it starts to boot and then dies. Whatever variation you're experiencing, a Cincinnati PC that won't turn on is one of the most alarming things that can happen — especially when you have work to do.

The good news: in most cases, your data is completely fine and the fix is simpler than you think. Here's how to diagnose what's actually wrong.

What happens when you press the power button?

The symptoms matter enormously because they point to completely different problems. Work through this list and find your situation:

Nothing happens at all — no lights, no fan, complete silence

Most likely cause: Power supply failure (desktops), dead battery or failed AC adapter (laptops), or a failed power button connection.

Try first: For desktops, check the power cable at both ends and try a different outlet. For laptops, try a different charger if you have one, or hold the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed (if removable) to discharge residual power, then reconnect and try again.

If nothing works: Likely needs a professional diagnosis. Desktop power supplies are inexpensive to replace ($40 to $80). Laptop power boards are slightly more involved.

Lights come on, fan spins, but the screen stays black

Most likely cause: RAM failure, failed graphics card, corrupted BIOS, or a monitor/display issue rather than the computer itself.

Try first: Connect your laptop to an external monitor via HDMI. If the external display works, the laptop screen itself has failed. For desktops, make sure the monitor is powered on and the cable is fully connected. Try a different cable or port.

From 16 years in Cincinnati: "Black screen but fans running" is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed problems. People assume the worst — dead motherboard — when it's often just a failed RAM stick or a $15 display cable.

Starts to boot, shows Windows logo, then crashes or restarts

Most likely cause: Corrupted Windows installation, failed hard drive or SSD, or a failed Windows update.

Try first: Let Windows attempt automatic repair — it often runs automatically after a few failed boots. If you see "Automatic Repair" on screen, let it run completely before doing anything else.

Important: Do not force-restart repeatedly. Each forced shutdown during a boot failure increases the risk of data loss if the drive is failing. If Windows can't repair itself after two attempts, power down and call us.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on startup

Most likely cause: Depends entirely on the error code. Common BSOD codes on startup include INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE (drive failure or driver issue), CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (Windows corruption), and MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (RAM failure).

Photograph the error code on your phone before the screen disappears. This gives us — or any technician — critical diagnostic information before we even touch the machine.

Turns on briefly, gets hot quickly, then shuts off

Most likely cause: Overheating due to clogged cooling vents or dried thermal paste. The PC is shutting itself down to prevent heat damage.

This is very fixable — a cleaning and thermal repaste typically resolves it completely. But do not keep trying to boot it — repeated overheating cycles cause permanent damage to the CPU and motherboard.

Is your data safe?

In the vast majority of "won't turn on" situations — yes, your data is completely fine. The data lives on your hard drive or SSD, and power supply failures, motherboard issues, and even most Windows corruption problems don't affect the storage device at all.

Even if the hard drive itself has failed, professional data recovery can retrieve files from drives that the computer can no longer access on its own.
